25 Stories: Connecting Kids to Local History – Chimney Rock and the 19th Hole Concerts

A small group enjoying the new 19th Hole Concerts, 2016

In 2016 when the 19th Hole Concerts community fundraiser first began, Chimney Rock Interpretive Association was in the group of first grantees.

Chimney Rock National Monument itself is situated 20 miles west of Pagosa Springs, marked by two beautiful rock towers that can be seen far and wide through the rolling alpine. At the top lies a treasure trove of archaeology left behind by the Ancestral Puebloans.

At the end of summer after the last song played, each organization with the 19th Hole Concerts, including Chimney Rock, had $750 to use toward their needs.

They used the funds for their youth programs, helping purchase supplies for the interactive activities that teach kids about what life was really like on the monument over 1,000 years ago.

Ten years later, the organization continues to run a slew of impressive programs for kids and adults alike, from creating coiled pots to yucca sandals like the ancestors.
