The Ballantine Family Fund: A Legacy of Civic Leadership

For nearly seven decades, the Ballantine Family Fund has helped nonprofits in Southwest Colorado thrive.
Established in 1957, the Fund reflects the values of Morley and Arthur Ballantine—journalists, activists, and philanthropists who believed deeply in informed communities and local action.
After moving to Durango in 1952, the couple helped shape regional dialogue through the Durango Herald, while also championing education, women’s rights, and cultural preservation. Their leadership was instrumental in the growth of Fort Lewis College and the creation of its Center of Southwest Studies.
Today, Richard Ballantine continues that legacy as president of the family fund.
After early involvement in the region’s nonprofit landscape, Richard helped guide the fund to be managed by the Community Foundation serving Southwest Colorado, inspired by Executive Director Briggen Wrinkle and a shared commitment to strengthening nonprofits across the region.
