25 Stories: Totally Unsolicited, Supporting Nonprofits who Feed their Communities

The Community Foundation sits in a unique position to respond to special projects as they arise in our communities, inspiring the SPUR Fund in 2023. Last winter of 2024, we learned that Care and Share Food Bank for Colorado had to make steep, 80% cuts to state food coalitions, a resource that many of our local nonprofits rely on to address food insecurity.

This “spurred” us to provide organizations with much-needed funding to keep shelves stocked for the holidays and colder months ahead, which included the Good Sam Food Collective in Cortez and Dove Creek ROCK (Reaching out to Community and Kids). Both nonprofits sit near the rural outskirts of Southwest Colorado, where basic resources are often far and wide for those in need.

ED of Dove Creek Rocks, Carol Marie, waves for us to get out of the cold and come inside office. She was preparing hundreds of stockings and food boxes to give out for Christmas.

Carol Marie, the Executive Director of ROCK, shares the impact of her SPUR Funding during a very busy time for her in the month of December:

“For many years, the Foundation has been a steadfast supporter of ROCK, offering funding, guidance, training, and lasting friendships. Recently, the Foundation made a generous gift to ROCK through the SPUR Fund, addressing important upcoming needs and creating a significant impact. Their ongoing support highlights the tremendous value Southwest community foundations bring to Dolores County.”
