Community Foundation Impact Grants

At the end of the year, the Community Foundation takes 50% of its individual contributions and uses them to award grants to organizations in Southwest Colorado. Impact Grants from the Foundation are intended to address special community needs that are not currently being met by other philanthropic sources, including our own directed funds. Generally, they are considered one-time grants that will have a unique impact. We do not advertise or solicit proposals for Impact Grants, but rely on our regular sources of grants requests and the knowledge of staff, board, and committee members. Grants may be awarded to meet special needs, like expansion of solid programs, new collaborative efforts, or sustaining essential community services. Normally, Impact Grants may range in amounts from $2,000-$5,000. However, the Foundation Board may modify this dollar amount to ensure that the grants are truly “impactful” in each situation. The Foundation’s Internal Affairs Committee will review each opportunity for an Impact Grant and make a timely recommendation to the Board, which shall have final approval.

I am a ‘horizontal’ as opposed to a ‘vertical’ person, meaning I have a wide variety of interests and passions as opposed to depth in one or two areas of need. Because of my broad base of interest, philanthropy was becoming a complicated, tedious, and solo effort. Setting up my Donor Advised Fund with the Community Foundation serving Southwest Colorado simplified the process. I am able to deliberately establish a giving pattern that will continue on after I am no longer able to make philanthropic decisions.

- Kathleen Adams, Board Member

I am extremely proud to be a Fund Holder, as well as President of the Board of Directors for this outstanding organization. It has elevated philanthropy in our community by pairing the needs of the nonprofits with those who have a passion to fund their mission. The Foundation is an important engine to our community’s health.
