October 24, 2017 – Board Training Series Session 2

Bold Boards, Big Impact: Building a Nonprofit Board with the Right People and Right Relationships

Tuesday, October 24 – 4-6pm | First National Bank of Durango, Community Room

Subjects to be covered:

• Board make-up
• Potential member identification and recruitment
• Onboarding and orientation
• Ongoing training and retention; retreats
• Relationships (internal to board, board with staff, board with community)


This intensive three-part training series is designed for board members of nonprofit organizations in Southwest Colorado.  The trainings are scheduled for October 10, October 24 and November 7 from 4-6pm. Registration for the full series is $60.

The three trainings will be facilitated by Illene Roggensack, President of Third Sector Innovations in Grand Junction.  Roggensack has been involved in organization development as a business owner, nonprofit executive director, board member, volunteer and consultant for 25 years.  She provided a board training series in Durango during the autumn of 2016 and presented as the keynote at Essentials for Thriving Nonprofits, a workshop for regional nonprofit professionals, in April 2016.

The Board Training series has been planned by the Southwest Rural Philanthropy Days (SW RPD) Interim Committee, a joint effort of local nonprofit leadership focused on continuing professional development to build a stronger nonprofit community.

Paying Attention to the Right Things: Assurance that the Nonprofit Board is On Point

Tuesday, November 7 – 4-6pm | First National Bank of Durango, Community Room

Subjects to be covered:

• Board self-evaluation
• Organizational success metrics and indicators
• Productive meetings and quality decision making
• Meaningful data (and its analysis) for use by the board
• Organization and succession planning
• Board needs at various stages of organization lifecycle

This ColoradoGives Lunch & Learn is for nonprofits that are approved for ColoradoGives  and are participating in the Southwest Colorado Gives regional platform.  The Community Foundation will provide an update on the roll out of the marketing plan. Please come with any ideas you would like to add.

Nicholas Kristof sold out; Jenna Bush Hager tickets on sale 10/5

Nicholas Kristof to speak to sold-out crowd

Two-time Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Nicholas will speak to a sold out audience at the Fort Lewis College Concert Hall on Wednesday, October 4 as part of the Community Foundation’s Making a Difference Speaker Series.  Take a listen to his interview with Tami Graham on KSUT!

The Making a Difference Speaker Series  is a new annual event that will bring nationally known speakers to Southwest Colorado to speak about philanthropy and how to make a difference.  Kristof, the event’s inaugural speaker, will tell first-hand stories of his experience promoting human welfare and social justice around the world in order to inform and inspire the audience.  His talk will focus on the highlights of his book, “A Path Appears,” available at Maria’s Bookshop.  A book signing will immediately follow the program.


Jenna Bush Hager to speak on April 25, 2018

Our next Making a Difference Speaker will be Jenna Bush Hager, who will speak at the Community Concert Hall on April 25. Tickets will go on sale on Thursday, October 5.

Jenna Bush Hager is a contributing correspondent on NBC’s Today Show and an editor-at-large for Southern Living magazine.  She is also the author of the New York Times best seller Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope, which she wrote after traveling to Latin America in 2006 as an intern with UNICEF. Ana’s Story is based on the life of a 17 year old single mother with HIV, who struggles to shield her child from the life she had of abuse and neglect.  Hager remains involved with UNICEF and is currently the chair of its Next Generation initiative, which is dedicated to reducing childhood deaths around the world.

ColoradoGives: Creating a Buzz – Marketing for SW CO Gives

This ColoradoGives Lunch & Learn is for nonprofits that are approved (or nearly approved) for ColoradoGives and are participating in the Southwest Colorado Gives regional platform.  The Community Foundation will provide an update on the budget we have to work with to promote SW CO Gives, as well as a potential marketing plan. Please come with any ideas you would like to add.

If you would like to participate in the regional platform, please submit your $100 participant fee to the Community Foundation by next Friday, October 13. 

Lunch & Learns are scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month in the First National Bank of Durango Community Room.  Lunch & Learns focus on education and resources regarding ColoradoGives, as well as provide local nonprofits the opportunity to connect.

October 4 – Making a Difference Speaker Series

We are thrilled to announce Nicholas Kristof, columnist for the New York Times, two time Pulitizer Prize winner and humanitarian, will be the first speaker in our new “Making a Difference” event series. He is confirmed to speak on Wednesday, October 4th at 7 pm at the Community Concert Hall. The following morning he will be a guest at an intimate breakfast at the Strater Hotel attended by sponsors and donors.

The Community Foundation launches Making a Difference Speaker Series featuring Nicholas Kristof, a New York Times Columnist and Pulitzer Prize winner to talk about making a difference one person at a time. Kristof is syndicated in the Durango Herald and his New York Times Best Seller, A Path Appears, aims to reconnect us through the myriad opportunities to make a difference provided by the new wave of social enterprise. He will speak to the community at the Community Concert Hall on Wednesday, October 4 at 7 p.m.  Purchase tickets here.
