HR Power Hour: Every Tuesday, September – October
In the last two years, Colorado has added and changed a slew of new policies that organizations need to know to ensure they’re in compliance. Join our HR Power Hour to make sure you’re in-the-know and have the tools to implement these new policies.
HR Power Hour takes place on Tuesdays at 12 PM from September 9 to October 14, via Zoom. The cost is $10/session or $50 for all 6. Attendees will be entered to win free HR services worth $500!
Our HR experts, Dave Albrechta, Esq. and partner of Aspen Grove Integrative Law, and Jennifer Bassignani, principal of Essential Operations Human Resources Consulting, will cover everything nonprofits need to know to update and optimize their HR practices, including employment law, successful onboarding, preventing conflict in the workplace, required HR policies, staff contracts, and building a culture of feedback.

This session will cover the big-picture fundamentals of employment law in Colorado, with a focus on helping nonprofits feel grounded and confident. Think of it as the “what you need to know” foundation.
- Basic legal concepts (at-will employment, protected classes, retaliation, etc.
- Enforcement agencies (EEOC, CCRD, CDLE) and how the complaint process work.
- Common pitfalls and how to proactively prevent them
- Overview of changes in the last few years (FAMLI, POWR, HFWA, PHEW, CWCA)
- A printable “cheat sheet” or checklist to reference later

Session 2: First Impressions are Lasting – The Importance of Onboarding

This session will focus on the importance of a structured onboarding process for employees and board members.
- Understanding of who is responsible for onboarding and who should be included in the process
- We only have one chance to make a good first impression – having the right tools and resources in place so we are setting the employee or board member up for success
- Onboarding is not complete in a week, or a month, proper onboarding can take up to a year

Session 3: Conflict Prevention & Resolution – Tools for a Healthier Workplace

This session is focused on proactive strategies for avoiding and managing conflict, particularly helpful for resource-strapped nonprofits
- Strategic approaches to conflict prevention with current and former employee
- Building a workplace mediation program (and when to use it)
- Tips from the perspective of an employee-side attorney: what triggers lawsuits and how to sidestep common landmines
- Real life example or hypothetical situation to talk through

This session will walk you through why you might need an HR Audit. Participants will learn the value of an HR Audit and how it may make their work life easier.
- If you have employees, you should consider an HR Audit, no matter how long you’ve been in business
- Identify gaps in compliance and wages, identify areas where we may need to update or improve policies or procedures to be more efficient or effective
- Establishing a solid HR foundation through an Audit means employers spend their time on their business, not creating policies and procedures on the fly

Session 6: Building a Culture of Feedback

This session you will learn the importance of providing feedback, both positive and challenging, and that feedback should come from all employees, not just leadership.
- How to give and receive feedback in a respectful and timely manner
- Understanding the difference between feedback and what you would do
- Providing a safe environment for feedback so all employees can continue to learn and improve
- How to segue from feedback to a formal process if necessary
